Heather & Zephyr – a love story from Maine

We have been together for 6 years! We actually first met on the school bus in high school. Zephyr went to a tech school, and rode the bus home with me. I was very shy and quiet, so I would sit with him because he was quieter than me, and I thought he was really cool with his greasy hair and spiked leather jacket with buttons pinned to it. The only thing he remembers about me is that I yelled at a kid for being rude. I never saw him after high school, but would look him up randomly on Myspace and decide it was too weird for me to send him a friend request. Years later, my mom's best friend, Kelly, started dating his mother, and she asked if I knew a kid named Zephyr. They duped us into going to a comic book convention together, and the rest is history!
Something we really like about each other is that we like to do a lot of the same things! We love going to the movies, giving each other foot massages, dancing, public radio, playing video games…our taste isn't always the same, but we love to find things we both enjoy.
I bought a ring and it came in the mail, and I didn't know how to propose. When it came in the mail, I ran to the post office and picked it up, and I was so nervous and excited that I walked into the house and said "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" Heather laughed and said "Say something nice about me first!" and I said "I love you and can't think of a time I won't want to be with you" and she said yes and cried.
We thought about eloping to Las Vegas and getting married by Elvis (that was always a dream of mine!) I even went out with my best friend and officiant, Ricky, and picked out a dress. On our drive home, however, I cried because I knew my dad wouldn't be there to walk me down the aisle, so Zephyr and I decided to have one big wedding.
Our wedding couldn't have been more perfect. We asked my aunt if we could get married on her beautiful property, and her and my uncle made it so lovely. It was personal, it was all about us coming together, and exactly what we wanted. It had been a crazy week with the weather; the week before we had gone up and it hailed! The day of our wedding, the sun was shining and there was a soft breeze. We just felt love and warmth and support coming from everyone and everything!
Planning was very stressful. There is some tension between our families, and Heather was in the middle of her first year teaching. We had over a year to plan, and we could have gone on and on forever; there was always more to do. It all came together in the end.
The important thing for Zephyr was that the guests had fun, for me it was that it was personal, and really about Zephyr and I. For us both, having a great photographer that reflected our style was important!
