Monica & Philip – a Love Story from Florida
We are originally from Brasília, Brazil but we live in London and got married at the house of Monica's parents in Boca Raton, Florida. We had a friend couple in common: Megan and Brad practiced Crossfit with Monica and Brad played American Football with Philip. We met at their farewell party at a bar in our hometown Brasília in Brazil. Monica had had a shitty day because she had just broken up with her 4-year boyfriend in not such good terms a few months before and he was going to be there. She wanted to avoid the stress and gossip but didn’t want to let them go without saying goodbye. So, naturally, she got a little drunk to endure this situation. Philip was there and planned to stay only for a while and go to another party afterwards, where he had a girl kind of waiting for him. (Monica) I was mesmerized by his smile and Philip fell in love with her hair and eyes. I added him on Facebook right away (Thanks Megan!!) hoping to talk to him the day after. But he surprised me, sat by my side and offered to take me home. We went to his place instead and no more details are necessary! We saw each other everyday but it was a doomed relationship as I was going to London in few months for my MA and he was studying for a Diplomatic career in Brazil. And we were very cool about this. That was the main factor that allowed our relationship to grow so strong and light at the same time: it had an expiry date. I moved in with him because I need a place to stay until my visa was ready. One day I suggested he came with me, as I was worried about him: things in our Country were very instable. The idea grew on him and he decided to join me. We’ve been inseparable since the first night we met, so that’s about 2 years and a month.
"Philip is strong, open and sincere. His smile made him stand out from the crowd that night. But what really made me fall for him was his perfect mix of strength and sensitivity: he’s so strong emotionally and physically without being a cocky caveman or too fragile." Monica
THE PROPOSAL: We were fighting like crazy. I mean, a lot. Philip had forgotten Monica’s birthday, probably because he was working a lot as well, but it was no excuse. Times were difficult, but a couple of months before we had bought plane tickets to go to Amsterdam for about 1 week, and it was time to go. Philip was very nervous and Monica very upset before Amsterdam, but on the first day, things started to calm down. So, after a long walking day that we had seen a lot of the city, we needed to sleep. However, we woke up together in the middle of the night and, still in bed, Philip proposed to Monica. Just like that. And she said yes! Not the most romantic scene, but true to our own way. And after that Monica understood why Philip was so nervous.
THE WEDDING: We always wanted to elope to a desert beach somewhere. Just the two of us. We didn’t care for parties or gifts. We even kept our engagement secret for over a month before telling our parents. We felt like this was our special moment. When we finally told them Monica’s parents insisted on us going home and throwing a proper party and ceremony for both families. It was the right thing to do. They wanted to share this moment. So we agreed, with one condition: it would be very small, relaxed and in our own terms: from the food, décor and guests. Our wedding was all about making our families happy, but on our way. We got married at the City Hall 7 months earlier in London with only Philip’s father as our witness. We wrote our ceremony and Monica’s brother was the celebrant. I think now he has a new career! 😃 We walked down the isle together in front of our 27 guests plus Rocker in Love. It lasted 10 minutes. It was perfect! (Grasi, thank you for being a hero and getting Philip’s vows. He was so nervous that he forgot them in our room!)
An advice I would give to a bride planning a wedding? Be sure of what you want and take your stand with both families, because everybody is going to have opinions and conflicts will emerge. Do not over share your plans to avoid these unwanted opinions, but also because it’s AMAZING too see their surprised faces! However, it’s important to also give clear and defined responsibilities for everyone that wants to participate.
